International Flights will assist Canberra Businesses, including Real Estate
From September, Canberrans will be able to fly from Canberra to Singapore or New Zealand. This is the final piece of the puzzle in Canberra becoming a great ‘world’ city that has been missing. Canberra Business Chamber chief executive Robyn Hendry said the new flights would drive tourism, exports and business. “Having direct international flights to Canberra will enable the region to leverage off its reputation as an innovation and knowledge hub and attract more international conferences.”
Singapore Airlines will fly direct services from Singapore to Canberra and Canberra to Wellington in a route dubbed the ‘capital express’, with four services a week to both capital cities on a Boeing 777-200. The start of direct international flights will create significant positive economic and social impacts for our city and the region in terms of trade, investment, higher education and tourism. Independent economic modelling shows these new flights will be worth tens of millions of dollars to our economy and create hundreds of jobs.
The ACT Government, through VisitCanberra, is partnering with Singapore Airlines and the Canberra Airport Group to deliver cooperative marketing activity in South East Asia, connecting markets and New Zealand. This will support future growth and create positive benefits for the ACT community. Singapore Airlines chief executive Goh Choon Phong said he is confident the flights would appeal to leisure, government and corporate travellers.
With several trade missions to Singapore in recent years, each mission has seen more representatives from our tourism, business and education sectors participate. Australia’s two biggest airports, Sydney and Melbourne, are continuing to benefit from a boom in travellers, with visitors from Asia, the UK and the US arriving in droves. Canberra Airport Chairman, Terry Snow announced Canberra passengers will be able to avoid flying through Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. "Having direct international flights to Canberra will pull people to the city from the region – they will come here to start or end their overseas journey. This will have potential benefits for local retailers as they are likely to shop, eat or stay here before they leave or on their return." All great cities of the world have international connectivity, and now Canberra’s journey can begin.
